When the lymphatic system is compromised, an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluids can occur in patients’ arms, legs, neck and genital area. This disorder can be related to congenital conditions, cancer, and cancer related treatment, as well as vascular diagnoses. Aside from potentially debilitating physical effects, being diagnosed with lymphedema may affect one’s physical, psychological and social well-being.

Although there is no cure for lymphedema, physical and occupational therapy can dramatically decrease discomfort and other symptoms, allowing patients to resume everyday activities. Managing Lymphedema is a lifelong process that includes repeated visits to multidisciplinary team specialists and a certified lymphedema therapist.

One caring area resident and Lymphedema patient decided to partner with Princeton Health in our mission to improve the quality of life for those who come to us for lymphedema treatment. This anonymous gift will be used to invest in innovative technology, expanded training and certifications for physical therapists, as well as enhanced education for patients, staff and clinicians.

There are a number of hurdles, including financial strain and insurance barriers, that prevent and/or obstruct this care. This very generous donation will enhance the level of care within our community while also expanding outreach and services to those in need.

Funding from this generous donor will support the following;

Advanced Equipment - The purchase of advanced technological software, our therapists would be able to provide the most accurate measurement of limb volume and circumference. Portable devices help provide patients with effective, at-home therapy.

Training and Certifications – As identification and diagnosis of lymphedema patients increases, so does the demand for qualified and certified lymphedema therapists. Funding will help equip our physical therapists with the very best in advanced learning.

Education - Enhancing awareness among the Princeton Health system and our communities as a whole will assist the ability of patients to seek out care for lymphedema. The earlier a patient is diagnosed, the better their outcomes will be.

Our patients depend on the entire Princeton area community to embrace this vision and support it with their gifts. If you are affected by Lymphedema or know someone in our area that is, please consider supporting this potentially debilitating condition.
