Don’t let a painful hip or knee slow you down
Every day, you use your hips and knees as you live your life - taking a walk, climbing the stairs, getting in and out of your car. If your joints are not 100 percent, even little movements can cause you discomfort and pain.
Good news! Whether your pain is due to an injury or a condition such as arthritis, joint replacement surgery can provide a safe and effective remedy, and get you back on your feet faster than you imagined. Some patients can even go home the same day.
Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement
Penn Medicine Princeton Health is one of four New Jersey healthcare organizations and 84 nationwide to earn advanced certification in total hip and total knee replacement from The Joint Commission, the nation's oldest healthcare accrediting body.
Part of Princeton Health, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center (PMC) has been providing outstanding orthopaedic care and joint replacement for decades, and is proud to be home to the Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement.
The Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement was made possible by a gift from Jim Craigie, who had both his hips replaced at Princeton Medical Center. Mr. Craigie was so pleased with the quality of the care he received – and the improved quality of his life – that he made a gift to establish this extraordinary center.
The Center is led by a team of board certified orthopaedic surgeons, a dedicated nurse navigator and physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, specially trained nurses, skilled physical therapists and an outstanding staff. It combines personalized, supportive care with the latest techniques in hip and knee replacement surgery and recovery. In fact, the expert surgeons at PMC perform over 1,400 joint replacements each year!
And now, some of our surgeons are performing these procedures with enhanced precision thanks to their use of robot-assisted technology. The precision of this approach may allow the patient to benefit from fewer complications, more precise implant positioning, the potential for longer lasting implants and a faster recovery with less pain.
We’re with you, every step of the way
The experts at the Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement have a comprehensive program to help eliminate your pain and restore your strength and mobility, so you can reclaim your life as soon as possible. We provide testing and patient education prior to surgery, and rehabilitative therapy and safe, effective pain management afterward.
You will be informed about your care and actively involved with it at every step. We even suggest you ask a family member or friend to play a very special role as your coach, as you prepare for surgery and recover from it. In most cases, you will be on your feet, walking with very little or no pain the very same day as surgery!
Same day procedures
The Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement now offers same-day, minimally invasive outpatient procedures for partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement. Candidates for this surgery must be highly motivated to achieve a rapid recovery and have a dependable support network at home. They must also be in relatively good health, with conditions such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure well controlled.
Patients who qualify for a same-day procedure will have one to two weeks of in-home physical therapy from Princeton HomeCare, and will then need additional therapy through outpatient rehabilitation. For more information on which surgeons offer same-day procedures, call 1.888.742.7496.
Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model
PMC is participating in a Medicare initiative called the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model. The CJR model aims to support better and more efficient care for beneficiaries undergoing lower-extremity joint replacement procedures, commonly referred to as hip and knee replacements. The following physicians are currently collaborating with PMC to participate in the CJR model:
- Hari Bezwada, MD
- Brian M. Culp, MD
- W. Thomas Gutowski, MD, FAAOS, Medical Director of the Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement
- Harvey E. Smires, MD
- Brian M. Vannozzi, MD
PMC is working closely with the doctors and other healthcare providers and suppliers who care for patients during and after their hospital stay and extending through the recovery period. To learn more about the CJR model, please visit https://innovation.cms.gov/initiatives/cjr.
