Through a collaboration with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, new genetic counseling and testing services are available through the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey LIFE Center at Princeton Medical Center.
Individuals seeking services on their own or through a physician referral will work closely with genetic counselors to document an in-depth family medical history and assess their risk of certain types of cancer, including:
Counselors can arrange for a blood test to determine if an individual is genetically susceptible to those types of cancer. For those who undergo genetic counseling, the LIFE Centers at PMC and the Breast Health Center provides pre-test counseling, post-test counseling and physician follow-up.
The LIFE Centers also serve as dedicated resources to educate the community on genetic testing and counseling.
Results from genetic testing conducted at both PMC sites will be reviewed by Deborah Toppmeyer, MD, director of the LIFE Center and chief of solid tumor oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
On designated days each month, board certified genetic counselors from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey's LIFE Center will be on-site at the main PMC campus, One Plainsboro Road, Plainsboro, and at the Breast Health Center, 300B Princeton-Hightstown Road, East Windsor.
