Clinical Pastoral Education at PHCS

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with Princeton HealthCare System

Also known as CPE, Clinical Pastoral Education is a program in which seminarians, clergy, and some qualified lay-people provide pastoral care to patients and engage in an "action-reflection" model of learning. Each student engages in group work with peers as well as in individual supervision with their supervisor. Clinical placements are available at the University Medical Center of Princeton, Princeton House Behavioral Health, and Princeton Hospice.

One unit of CPE is required for ordination in many faith traditions. Four units of CPE is required in order to seek board certification as a chaplain.

We currently have two CPE offerings:

1)  An 11-week, full-time summer unit

2)  A part-time, academic year unit

Each offering includes 300+ hours of patient care, 100+ educational hours, occasional Sunday worship leadership at the University Medical Center of Princeton and Princeton House Behavioral Health, and occasional on-call coverage. Each student will serve as the primary chaplain on two units and participate as part of the departmental team.

We are currently in the planning stages for starting a CPE Residency in Fall 2017 and will begin recruitment in 2016.

Our CPE program is affiliated with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (www.acpe.edu)
