Princeton HealthCare System Earns Award for Timely Web Chat

Feb 25, 2014
Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) was honored in PR Daily's first-ever Social Media Awards, winning "Best Live Chat" for an online session about mental illness held less than a week after a December 2012 shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The web chat-hosted by Madhurani Khare, MD, a board certified psychiatrist with Princeton House Behavioral Health, a unit of PHCS-aired live on PHCS' UStream channel, , on Dec. 20, 2012. [Read more about the Best Live Chat award here.]

In her presentation, Dr. Khare, Medical Director of the Princeton House outpatient site in Hamilton, N.J., touched on the stigma attached to mental illness and provided practical advice on recognizing early warning signs, finding help and encouraging family members or friends to seek help when needed.

PHCS typically hosts two live chats per month on the UStream channel featuring physicians or other healthcare professionals.

"PHCS has been hosting web chats since 2010 because we recognized their enormous potential as a public service," said Carol Norris-Smith, PHCS Vice President for Marketing & Public Affairs. "The web chats provide easy, convenient access to healthcare experts from the comfort of the participant's own home. After the shooting in Connecticut, many people had questions about mental illness and how to access services. We wanted to help."

"So many people's lives are affected by mental illness, yet at the same time most people seem to know very little about it," Dr. Khare said. "Or, worse still, they may have distorted views about people with mental illness. The web chat provided a venue for us to have a rational, factual discussion about identifying those who need help and encouraging them to get it."
