Final Steel Beam of New Hospital Visits UMCP
Nov 20, 2009
Princeton, NJ (Nov. 20, 2009) - Barry S. Rabner, president and CEO of Princeton HealthCare System (left), and Mark Jones, president of University Medical Center at Princeton (UMCP), sign a steel beam that will be used in the construction of University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro. The 30-foot beam, which arrived at UMCP on November 19, will remain at the existing Princeton hospital until December 2, 2009, for gathering signatures before it is raised into place in a "topping out" ceremony at the new hospital's construction site on December 3. A topping out ceremony is a steelworkers' tradition in which a beam carrying an evergreen tree to symbolize good luck is placed at a new structure's highest point. This ceremony will mark the final stage of steel-frame construction at the new hospital, which is scheduled to open in late 2011.
