Princeton HealthCare System Partnership with Hamilton Area YMCA Brings Hospital-Based Physical Therapy and Outreach Program to Residents

Feb 10, 2009

HAMILTON, NJ - Residents of the greater Hamilton area can now attend Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) education programs and take advantage of a new, full-service, state-of-the art outpatient rehabilitation facility close to home thanks to a partnership between PHCS and the Hamilton Area YMCA.

The recent expansion of the YMCA's John K. Rafferty Branch on Whitehorse-Mercerville Road includes 8,000 square feet dedicated to the University Medical Center at Princeton Outpatient Rehabilitation Network site at Hamilton, and the PHCS Community Education & Outreach Program at Hamilton. Both are available to YMCA members and non-members alike.

The new PHCS services are designed to complement the range of health, wellness and community services offered by the Hamilton Y.

The UMCP Outpatient Rehabilitation Network site at Hamilton features certified physical and occupational therapists with special training to help people of all ages recover from sports injuries, surgery, neurological damage, work injuries, auto accidents and other conditions.  Beyond its role as a rehabilitation facility, the new site also offers custom, medically supervised training regimens to help people achieve superior conditioning and improve performance in favorite sports and activities.

Day and evening appointments are available. The Hamilton site is the latest addition to UMCP's large outpatient rehabilitation network, which also offers services in Princeton, Cranbury and Lawrenceville.

"The combination of education and physical therapy with state-of-the-art equipment under one roof makes a unique resource for both teaching and training," said Rich Aspenleider, UMCP Manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation.  "We're focused not only on helping people recover from injury, but on guiding people to greater physical well-being as a way to prevent injury."

The award-winning PHCS Community Education & Outreach Program offers a range of health education programs led by physicians of University Medical Center at Princeton, the system's acute care hospital, and other members of the PHCS healthcare team.  Upcoming events include CPR instruction courses, pet CPR and first aid, and healthy cooking workshops.

The PHCS Community Education & Outreach Department provides a continuous lineup of community-based education and outreach programs addressing the interests of people of all ages and walks of life. In 2008, PHCS presented 1,163 such programs reaching 35,000 people across Central New Jersey.

The department and its staff have been recognized with a variety of honors including the prestigious Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) Award and the Frances Black Humanitarian Award.

"We are delighted to bring our programs to Hamilton through the Hamilton Area YMCA,"said PHCS Director of Community Education & Outreach Alan Axelrod.  "There is something for everyone across the lifespan, from children to seniors."
