Charles Evans Foundation Continues Legacy of Noted Fashion Designer, Film Producer and Philanthropist

The Charles Evans Foundation has pledged $1 million toward the construction of University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, the new, state-of-the-art hospital to replace the downtown Princeton facility that has been home to University Medical Center at Princeton since 1919.

The contribution, announced today by hospital-parent Princeton HealthCare System, brings to $82 million the total in philanthropic gifts and pledges raised to date for the new medical center. It also brings PHCS $1 million closer to the $115 million goal of the Design for Healing fundraising campaign spearheaded by its Princeton HealthCare System Foundation.

In recognition of the gift, the new medical center will name a rehabilitation facility for patients with cardiac and pulmonary conditions for Mr. Evans. The Charles Evans Pulmonary Rehabilitation Gym will be located in the new hospital's George and Estelle Sands Center for Cardiac and Pulmonary Care. In addition, a room for surgical procedures within the hospital's Center for Surgical Care will be named The Charles Evans Procedures Room.

"Charles Evans lived his life to the fullest, and he'd be pleased to know that his gift will help others obtain the care they need to live fuller, healthier lives," said The Charles Evans Foundation President Linda J. Munson.

Evans, who died in 2007, was co-founder of the fashion house Evan-Picone and a successful film producer whose credits included the acclaimed movie "Tootsie" starring Dustin Hoffman.

He was also a prominent philanthropist with a passionate devotion to causes including Alzheimer's research and fire safety awareness. The foundation he launched in 1988 continues that philanthropic legacy through support for a wide range of causes and charities.

"The creation of University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro is a community-wide enterprise," said Princeton HealthCare System President and CEO Barry S. Rabner. "We are so grateful to count The Charles Evans Foundation among the many friends and supporters who are helping to build what will be one of the finest regional medical centers in the United States."

The new hospital will be located on Route One in Plainsboro between Scudders Mill Road and Plainsboro Road, about three miles from the current hospital's downtown Princeton location.  The new medical center will occupy 50 acres of land and serve as the hub of a 160-acre health campus that will also include a medical office building, a fitness and wellness center, a health education center, a skilled nursing facility, pediatric services and a 32-acre public park along the Millstone River.

The cost of the new medical center is estimated at $442 million. It is scheduled to open in late 2011.
