Senior Link, an outpatient behavioral health program designed for older adults, is now available at all four outpatient sites operated by Princeton House Behavioral Health (PHBH).

The PHBH location in Hamilton added Senior Link this summer, joining the outpatient sites in North Brunswick, Princeton and Cherry Hill. Senior Link serves older adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, often as a result of the loss of friends and family members, either through relocation or death; loss of structure, due to retirement; or the loss of physical abilities due to illness or injury.

“These are people who have been independent for many years but now are having some difficulties in their lives,” said Khaja Faisal, MD, a staff psychiatrist at PHBH-Hamilton. “Our patients benefit from interacting with others who have similar issues.”

Therapist Bettyna Brown said the program serves as a liaison between patients and their families, ensuring that patients have the supports they need.

“This population has unique difficulties, and we are able to tailor the program to each individual,” Ms. Brown said.

Patients typically enter the program on a partial hospital basis, or five full days of programming per week. Over time, a patient’s involvement may be stepped down to an intensive outpatient level of care, which features half-day programming, three days a week.

The program includes a comprehensive evaluation by a board certified psychiatrist; group and individual counseling; coping and life-skills training; family therapy and education; and education about maintaining physical and emotional health.

Senior Link is one of several specialized programs offered by PHBH. Others include programs tailored to children, adolescents, young adults, adults and women.

Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance plans are accepted. To make a referral, please call (888) 437-1610.

Specialized Women's Behavioral Health Programs Now Offered in North Brunswick and at a New Address in Princeton

As of September 27, 2010, Princeton House Behavioral Health expanded its specialized Women's Program to our outpatient site located at 1460 Livingston Avenue in North Brunswick, NJ. This expansion brings to women located in North Brunswick and surrounding communities access to specialized behavioral healthcare for those who have experienced trauma, major life changes or are in recovery from substance abuse.

"The mental health needs of women are distinct and becoming better appreciated and understood by researchers and clinicians. This trend led to more effective and specialized treatment," said Nathalie Edmond, Psy.D. Director of PHBH Women's Programs. "Our Women's Programs are at the forefront when it comes to addressing those needs and helping women build better lives."

We are now able to help serve the needs of women in Middlesex and other surrounding counties at the North Brunswick location. Four different programs will be offered at our newest outpatient site:

Women's Trauma

Women's Trauma & Addiction

Women's Wellness

Women's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Please click program for further description.

As a result of this expansion of our program to North Brunswick, Princeton House Behavioral Health now provides specialized outpatient treatment for women at a total of four outpatient locations throughout the State of New Jersey: Princeton, Hamilton, Cherry Hill and North Brunswick (NEW).

In addition, PHBH relocated it Women's Program in Princeton to a new address: 1000 Herrontown Road in Princeton, NJ. We are now located across the street from our inpatient services site.

As of October 4, 2010, the newly located Princeton location began a new evening program: Emotion Regulation Intensive Outpatient Program. This unique program will run Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Please click program to view description.

The Women's Program in Princeton will no longer offer Trauma and Addiction, however, it will still be offered in Mercer County at the Hamilton site and will now be offered at the new North Brunswick Women's Program location.

Specialized Treatment Tailored to Unique Needs of Women

HAMILTON, NJ - Princeton House Behavioral Health announces the expansion of its Women’s Programs, now available at 300 Clock Tower Drive in Hamilton, New Jersey. This unique program will provide specialized care to women in the Mercer County area who may have experienced trauma, major life change or are in recovery from addiction.

“The unique mental health needs of women are becoming better appreciated and understood by researchers and clinicians. This trend has led to more effective and specialized treatment,” said Nathalie Edmond, Psy.D., Director of PHBH Women's Programs. “Our Women’s Programs are at the forefront when it comes to addressing those needs and helping women build better lives.”

Women are two to three times more likely to develop problems with depression or anxiety than men. In fact, depression is the leading cause of disability for a woman living in the United States.

PHBH, a unit of the Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS), developed the Women’s Programs to address the unique biological and psychosocial factors that influence women’s emotional health. Research has shown that women have better outcomes in “gender-sensitive” programs in which therapists have greater insight into a women’s perspective, their response to different treatment approaches and even the different impact medication can have on their unique physiology.

The philosophy throughout the Women’s Programs involves the relational model, which believes that the way women work in the world and the way that they heal is through relationships. Treatment in all of the Women’s Programs integrates evidence-based and outcomes-informed practices to our core strength-based treatment models. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an approach that blends individual and group therapy to help individuals regulate their emotions and behavior, also informs all Women’s Programs groups. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder, research has shown that DBT is effective at treating patients with a wider variety of symptoms and behaviors.

The program offers services across four areas or tracks:

Women’s Wellness: Aimed at individuals with symptoms of depression or anxiety stirred by life transitions or stressors of particular significance to women. The treatment program is designed to help women develop skills to reduce anxiety, enhance their mood and esteem, better care for their own physical and emotional health, and create and maintain healthier relationships.

Women’s Trauma: Women who were subjected to trauma or abuse – such as long-term psychological, sexual, physical or verbal abuse, as well as rape or domestic violence – are predisposed to emotional, psychological and relational problems throughout their lives. The program helps women to establish and maintain personal safety by building self-esteem and confidence, as well as learning basic coping and relationship-building skills and healthy ways to manage emotions.

Women’s Trauma and Addiction: This program is aimed at women who use harmful substances or engage in harmful behaviors due to the aftermath of trauma or abuse. Like the Trauma track, this treatment strives to help individuals build self-esteem and confidence and learn basic coping and relationship-building skills and healthy ways to manage emotions. In addition, treatment is designed to help women achieve abstinence and to educate them on their addiction. The trauma and addiction issues are treated simultaneously because the emotional impact of trauma often worsens in early recovery when the individual is no longer using addictive substances to cope. If the emotional pain is not addressed, the person is susceptible to relapsing into their addiction.

DBT Skills: As the newest track, this program helps women who have difficulty processing emotions and tend to respond with self-harming behaviors, including suicidal tendencies and relapse into substance abuse. The treatment focuses on teaching skills to help women exert greater control over their emotions and avoid life-threatening behaviors.

All four Women’s Program tracks are offered as either a partial hospital program – six-hour day treatment sessions for three to five days per week – or an intensive outpatient program, which uses three-hour treatments for three to four days per week.

The four Women’s Program tracks also remain available at Princeton House’s Main Campus in Princeton. Additionally, the Women’s Trauma Program is offered at Princeton House’s Cherry Hill Location.
