Emergency Services at University Medical Center at Princeton

NineOneOne bar short

The Emergency Department (ED) at University Medical Center at Princeton provides state-of-the-art emergency medicine, treating patients with all medical problems that cannot wait to be seen by their regular doctor, as well as severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

The Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is staffed around-the-clock by physicians who are board certified in emergency medicine and registered nurses who are trained in trauma, emergency care and disaster preparedness. UMCP’s Emergency Department cares for more than 40,000 patients each year from throughout the greater Mercer County area.

UMCP’s Emergency Department is led by:
  • Craig A. Gronczewski, MD , Emergency Medicine Department Chair
  • David Clark, Emergency Department Nurse Manager

The department offers rapid treatment of minor illnesses and emergencies in 90 minutes or less in most cases, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily in UMCP’s Fast Track Suite.

For patients with more serious illnesses and conditions, or patients who visit outside of Fast Track hours, wait times have also been reduced significantly by a number of efficiencies that have been implemented throughout the Emergency Department. All patients receive outstanding, individualized care, with access to advanced equipment and therapies as needed.

UMCP is designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. This designation is based on UMCP’s advanced capabilities and protocols for the rapid and effective treatment of stroke patients. For more information on UMCP’s Stroke Center, click here.

For heart attack patients, UMCP’s board certified physicians, specialists and nurses provide critical life-saving treatments such as emergency angioplasty, a procedure that opens clogged arteries without the need for invasive heart surgery. UMCP also offers therapeutic hypothermia, a relatively new advancement that reduces the chance of brain damage for select heart attack patients and gives them a better chance at full recovery.
